When it comes to body sculpting surgery, aftercare should never be an afterthought, and abdominoplasty is no exception. Like all cosmetic procedures, tummy tucks require aftercare to ensure the body is given enough time to heal after being put through such stress. So following your doctor’s strict instructions will help ensure you have a smooth recovery and results you’re truly happy with.

While we have already touched on what a tummy tuck is, why you would want one and who would make the perfect candidate, there is more to be said on the recovery process. So here are our thoughts on what to do after surgery so you can get the most out of your tummy tuck.

What is it?

Tummy tucks are one of the most highly requested body contouring procedures at our Rockingham/Mandurah and Perth offices. Involving the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while also tightening the muscles beneath the skin, abdominoplasty is ideal for those unable to obtain the flat and toned stomach they desire through diet and exercise alone.

The Recovery Process

Abdominoplasty requires a much longer recovery time than most common body sculpting cosmetic procedures, but the amazing results are worth it. However, it’s up to the individual to ensure the surgery is aided through appropriate practices during recovery.

Minimising Scarring

Tummy tucks do result in a scar because the surgery requires an incision. Understandably, most patients want minimal scarring where this is possible. Fortunately, Dr Padovan works to minimise the length of the scar and makes the incision low enough on your abdomen so it can be covered by a bathing suit.

He will also give you comprehensive instructions to help ensure the scar heals as well as possible in the recovery phase. While there are many factors that contribute to scar healing such as skin type and smoking, whether or not you follow recovery directions with diligence will make a huge difference.

After Abdominoplasty

Your doctor will provide you with a set of comprehensive instructions for caring for your scar after surgery, however there are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Try and walk as soon as possible after your surgery to reduce swelling and the risk of blood clots
  • Refrain from smoking for at least 6 weeks
  • Follow a healthy diet, including plenty of liquids, fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Refrain from lifting heavy items and avoid any strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks
  • Avoid any activity that stretches, bends or causes you to put pressure on your abdomen
  • Avoid sexual activity for 3 weeks after your surgery

Some research also suggests using Vitamin E topically helps to improve the appearance of scars. Applying 100% pure Vitamin E at least once a day for the first couple of months keeps your scar moisturised and gives you the chance to massage the scar tissue once it’s healed. However, if you experience any skin irritation or an allergic reaction, discontinue use.

It’s also extremely important to use sunscreen on your scar for at least one year after surgery. Given scars are made of new skin, they react differently to the sun than normal skin. Therefore using sunscreen will prevent it from becoming darker than the surrounding skin. If you can, it’s best to avoid sunning the area entirely, but if not, make sure to use a formula made specifically for scars or something that’s SPF 30 or higher.

Finally, make sure to clean your incision daily. Not only will keeping your scar clean and healthy reduce its appearance, it will also reduce your risk for infection.
