Your circulatory system is one of the most important systems in your body. It is responsible for carrying nutrients, hormones, and other chemicals to your organs and cells; carrying toxins and other wastes from your body; and protecting your body from harmful pathogens and bacteria.

The circulatory system is also responsible for carrying oxygenated blood around your body to keep your vital organs, cells and muscles alive and working at their optimum levels.

What does bad circulation mean for my skin?

Do you know that your skin only receives 1.7% of the blood flow from your heart?

When your circulation becomes poor, your blood stream cannot transport nutrients and oxygen to your cells and organs, and cannot remove toxins. This build-up of toxins and a lack of nutrients can cause your skin to become uneven, inflamed, and age faster than usual.

Oxygen distribution is important for cell renewal and regeneration, and for the production of collagen (the structural protein that gives your skin its strength and elasticity and replaces dead cells). A lack of oxygen can lead to a breakdown in collagen production, which causes and can accentuate the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots. Without oxygen, your cells break down more often and do not regenerate at the same rate. This leads to a build-up of dead skin cells on your skin.

What is Microdermabrasion and how can it help improve my circulation?

Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-surgical, and non-invasive procedure that deeply exfoliates and polishes your skin to stimulate cell growth. It also fixes poor circulation by drawing blood to your skin’s surface.

At Timeless Cosmetics, we use a medical grade microdermabrasion unit with a vacuuming system to draw blood to your skin’s surface, and diamond tips (instead of crystal tips) to exfoliate your skin.

By improving your body’s circulation, microdermabrasion:

  • Brings oxygen and nutrients to your skin’s surface to refresh and regenerate the skin.
  • Improves your skin’s freshness and complexion by aiding your body’s removal of any toxin build up which can cause skin inflammation.
  • Increases the level of oxygenated blood in your skin’s tissues. Doing this increases your body’s intercellular activity and assists with your skin cells’ regeneration.

Other benefits of microdermabrasion are:

  • An improvement in the appearance of acne, scars, pigmentation, and sun damage.
  • An increase in your skin’s absorption of skin care products.

The treatment lasts for 30 minutes. At the end of your treatment, your skin should have a healthy red glow because of the increased circulation.

It is also important to note that microdermabrasion is not only for your face. Your neck and chest area, and the back of your hands, legs and back can also be treated.

How can I prepare for my microdermabrasion treatment?

  • Avoid sun bathing and waxing for at least two weeks before your appointment.
  • Avoid using any Retin-A creams or medicines for at least six months before your appointment.
  • Before your appointment, wash your face with oil-free and soap-free cleanser.
  • Stop taking anti-inflammatories at least one week before the treatment if approved by your healthcare professional. Anti-inflammatories increase your risk of bleeding or facial rashes because they thin your capillaries.
  • Don’t have any laser treatments, or any facial procedures like chemical peels for at least three weeks before your treatment.

What happens during my treatment?

Before your treatment begins, your nurse will prepare your skin to maximise the microdermabrasion’s effect on your face.

Following the treatment, a soothing mask, advanced hydration moisturiser, and some daily SPF 30+ moisturiser is applied to your face.

How many treatments do I need?

Microdermabrasion treatments are done in a series of six sessions. We recommend having the treatment done every two weeks for three months. The treatments should also be combined with a daily home-based skin care program.

How do I look after my skin after my microdermabrasion treatment?

Your skin is more sensitive following your microdermabrasion treatment. We recommend wearing a good, broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Our top product pick is Lira Clinical’s Solar Shield sunscreen! It is SPF 30 to shield your skin from sun damage and UVA/UVB rays. It also contains plant stem cells to leave your skin looking and feeling rejuvenated!
